New RV Club...

While driving the Alcan highway, we became acquainted with a new RV club that offers tremendous campground discounts. We did not know that this club existed and the discounts will blow you away.
The name of the club is “Freeloaders,” and the membership is free!
Once you become a member, you can park overnight at any rest area or pull out free of charge. Of course, there are no hook-ups and most of the time no cell signal to call 911 when an axe murdered hatches through the walls of your RV.

As we advanced north through the Alcan highway, we started to notice that close to dusk, many RV'ers would pull into a rest area or sometimes just onto a wide shoulder and park.
First we thought, “maybe they are resting for a couple of hours and then they will keep going.”
But during the mornings, we would pass more rest areas with RV's with the awning down, some with camping chairs out and some.....even unhitched! The only thing missing were the plastic pink flamingos proudly standing in front of the camp sites.

As we continued north, the Freeloader camps became larger and bolder. Tents and outside cooking areas with clotheslines. We were perplexed, and every time we paid $35 for camping...jealous. But every time we went through a Freeloader sighting, we reassured ourselves that the police, an axe murderer, or our friend Sasquatch would get them...I mean, come-on! This is illegal in the US of anal A.

The cherry on the top came when an attendant at a full campground told campers that they had two options:
a) Park in the overflow area and pay the fee
b) Park outside the park, across the road, in the rest area for free.

Well...that made if official, we started to strongly consider joining the club.
Our membership cards came the day that we had to spend the morning fixing our truck windshield and we got a late start on the leg from Whitehorse to Destruction Bay. We came across a super wide unmarked parking area next to the shores of a beautiful lake and parked to rest and take photographs. The question became unavoidable: Should we spend the night here? What about the axe murderer or Sasquatch?

After a while, another RV pulled into the same area, and they were on the same boat, thinking about joining the Freeloader Club, but afraid of Sasquatch. So we joined forces ans stayed the night. It turned out OK!
