The early bird gets the worm...

2010-04-21:

The early bird gets the worm...in a cold early morning while other lazy birds get up at 10AM and get a worm covered in organic honey and walnuts with a cappuccino on the side.

Today we drove just a couple of hours form Itasca State Park to the outskirts of Fargo, North Dakota. We are stopping here to visit relatives from out dear former neighbors, Curt and Helen.

By the way, during this drive we came across two interesting town names...

Nimrod MN

and

Downer MN

We had a very hard time finding RV parks in Fargo, North Dakota. As a matter of fact, since we left St. Louis, we started to come across “closed for the season” private parks, and State Parks with all services turned off for the season. It seems that up north central USA, camping season starts May 1st, so we have been “winter boondocking.” We got suckered in and fooled by a very unusual early and warm spring. We have been told that, normally, April is usually pretty cold, with some snow.

So, we have been the “early birds” getting the worm. The metaphoric worm being empty parks with hassle free staying. No crowds, no reservations....no water, no services... discounted rates. Great!

The upside to this, has been that we have had entire campgrounds and parks for ourselves, peace and quiet. The downside has been hustling for water and getting our extended share of 35F nights.

So, in Fargo we stayed at the city campground of Barnesville ND, abut 20 miles south of Fargo. It is a really nice campground with full hookups, off season only electricity is available.
