2010-03-06: Today we drove from Cottonwood Camp in Big Bend to Davis Mountains Texas State Park. We stopped one last time in Study Butte to charge diesel, then drove to Alpine, TX.
The Study Butte store is a colorful, interesting place if you drive through, stop, stretch your legs, read the signs, and chat with the locals.

In Alpine I engaged in my first traffic oops! by driving the wrong way in one of Alpine's main streets. I never assumed that such a small town would have “One Way” streets. Alarmed Alpinites flashed their high beams as I swerved away from incoming traffic. By sheer luck, the way to avoid impending disaster, was to pull into a gas station where we landed perfectly in front of a diesel pump. Let's take this as a sign to re-fuel. Oh! Well, something for the Sunday church goers to talk about: “Did you see that ding-dong pulling a silver trailer the wrong way on Main Street? I tell'ya, dang tourists are ruining the place.
We arrived at Davis Mountains State Park past midday. The area is beautiful. The high altitude changed the landscape from desert to high plateaus endlessly covered with tall yellow grass. We parked the Silver Whale in a pull through camping site with full hookups. Then drove to the town of Fort Davis to check it out. It is a pretty cute town. From the other towns in the region, Terlingua, Alpine, and Marfa, Fort Davis is the one that I like the most. Lots of houses for sale here....First candidate for relocation?

If you get a chance go to McDonald Observatory nearby. It's one of the darkest places in the country and has some awesome telescopes! They have star parties on the weekend.
Bobby's cousin works at the Ft. Davis NHS. That's a fun place to visit, too. There is an eclectic coffee shop (or used to be) on the right side of town as you are driving through from the campground. Have a great time!
Yeah! we visited the Observatory. What a great tour and view. The coffee shop is still there. We had some delicious quesadillas.
I'm familiar with the one-way streets in Alpine. Almost made the same mistake you did except in a car, not in a truck and 30-foot trailer.
A good place for breakfast in Alpine is Magoo's on the west-bound one-way across from McDonald's.
This photo is wonderful. It makes you feel as if you're the only ones on the planet. I'm enjoying yours and Vicky's blogs and the photos. Traveling vicariously is pretty darn nice - You do all the work and I get to enjoy!
