Milepost...

The Milepost is the Alcan Bible. It is a fat book that lists mile-by-mile what you will find along the Alcan Highway. Gas stations, restaurants, hotels, RV camps, and all sorts of services. All this goodness plus interesting and historical facts related to every portion of the highway.

So, given all this valuable information for a very reasonable price, I insisted on not buying one, to the amusement and dismay of my wife. So we navigated the Alcan for the first days without a Milepost, that is until the day we stopped for lunch at Muncho Lake. A couple in a big truck and rig in tow with Alaskan license plates pulled up next to us. A big ol'bearded man greeted us and started to make conversation. As a long time Alaska resident, he started to tell us all about the Alcan, and where to find more information in our Milepost book.

“We do not have a Milepost book” we replied.

The man's eyes widened and he almost dropped his meal from his hands. He turned and shouted to his wife still in the truck.

“Honey! These people do not have a Milepost with them.”

We could hear the wife spitting her beverage when she heard the news. She started to get out of the truck saying “what is wrong with them?” and that maybe she had an extra Milepost somewhere to give to us. I could tell that the man wanted to answer his wife, “well...they look kind of young and they are from Texas.”

Well, the lady did not have an extra book, but we felt ashamed enough that in the next opportunity my wife got one. Since then, she has been reciting every milepost entry on the way.

If you drive the Alcan...get your Milepost!

But wait a minute - has it been fun / helpful? (Other than for avoiding Alcaners shame :-D)

Well...If you ask my wife, she thinks that the thing is worth its weight on gold...I am still of the fence.

For me, it has been helpful to know about the spots where rest areas and pull outs are. Also some warnings about closed fuel stations and such.

The bulk of the book seems to be filled with business related "infomercials" to entice the tourist to stop and spend $ in towns.

It is a fun read on the long Alcan miles....if you have someone to read it to you while you drive :)
